What is broadband?
If you currently access the Internet using a dial-up modem over your telephone line, you'll know what a frustrating experience it can sometimes be. You may have difficulty getting connected, downloading anything large can take forever, and what about when someone else wants to use the phone? These problems and others are solved when you have an ADSL broadband Internet service on your telephone line. With ADSL you get the following benefits:
- you can access the Internet at the same time as using your telephone
- you pay a flat-rate monthly fee for the Internet, no matter how much you use it
- your connection to the Internet is at least 10 times faster than with a dial-up modem
- connection is instantaneous, and you can stay connected for as long as you like
Broadband works by converting your existing BT telephone line using ADSL. This requires equipment at the telephone exchange and equipment in your home. On behalf of your ISP, BT connect you at the telephone exchange and you provide your own equipment (e.g. Modem and Microfilters) for your home and you install it yourself ("Self-install"). You can find more information about self-install and how to do it here in the Support Zone.
Once you have a broadband Internet connection you will never look back, it will revolutionise the way you use the Internet.
